EDDIE'S PERFECT SHOT AT MORNINGTON

Eddie Hodge from Mornington GC is the latest junior to register an ace with SAJG. Playing the tricky par 3 16th at Mornington, Eddie's 5 iron found the cup on the back tier of the green.

STUART APPEARS LIVE AT KINGSTON HEATH

Stuart and his coach Steve Bann appeared live at Kingston Heath GC on Tuesday, December 16 for SAJG members.

A free clinic, exhibition and autograph session were the highlights of the morning. Steve put Stuart through his paces and they demonstrated the finer points of shot shaping. Some putting drills followed, with Stuart showing the drills that top tour professionals use to hone their stroke.

Stuart then signed autographs and had some lunch with the eager crowd before being the guest of honour at the presentation of the SAJG Club Teams Final.

EASTWOOD TAKES OUT THE CLUB TEAMS FINAL

The team from Eastwood GC have taken out the 2008 Club Teams Championship. Represented by Campbell Smith, Scott Daffy, Daniel Slattery and Chris Currie, they returned a team score of +17 to hold off runners up Yarra Yarra on +13 and Woodlands on +11. Stuart was on hand to meet the finalists and present the prizes.

Best individual score of the day was +12 returned by Campbell Smith, with Bryce Bell heping the YYGC team with +11.

MURRAY RIVER JUNIOR MASTERS WRAP

Kristian Bobanovic from New South Wales GC and Reanna Mathews from Leongatha GC have taken out the boys and girls titles in the 2008 Murray River Junior Masters. The overall nett prize was won by Yoyo Han from Sandhurst GC, edging out Owen Woodley from Cabramatta GC.

80 players contested the tournament in generally difficult conditions over the courses at Cobram Barooga and Tocumwal Golf Clubs. SAJG wishes to thank both clubs for their great support of the tournament.

NOVEMBER 2008

2008 SIGNATURE TOURNAMENT

The St John course at the Heritage provided a stern test in cold and blustery conditions for the 118 participants in the 2008 SAJG Signature Tournament. The signature hole at The Heritage, the par 3 11th, claimed many victims on the day!

There were some great scores returned in the conditions with the boys winner, Jason Lee, winning in a sudden death playoff with Harrison Savage from Huntingdale/Sale GC. Both tied on 74 and a crowd of some 60 spectators saw Jason prevail on the thrid extra hole.

The girls winner was Jacinta Brideson who returned a fine score of 77 to win comfortably from Catherine Odgers in second place.

TEAM GOLF FOR SCHOOLS STATE FINAL

98 students, in 24 School teams from all over Victoria, competed in the “Team Golf for Schools” State Final played at the Latrobe Golf Club. Last year’s favourites, the team from De La Salle College consisting of Charles Stewart, Alex Stott, Doug Loton and Josh Vitacca, won on a count back from Oberon High School (Geelong). Both teams finished with very impressive scores of 4 under par 31.

SAJG would like to thank all the teachers, parents and students for making this day a sucess. (A special thank you to all who travelled many hours and, some who even stayed overnight in Melbourne just to compete.)

We'd also like to thank Latrobe Golf Club for their generosity in hosting the event for the second year running. The course was presented magnificently, which made the low winning scores possible.

MONTHLY MEDAL NEWS - OCTOBER

October proved to be one of the tightest competitions to date for the Monthly Medal. A lot of great scores were returned including scores of 8 under from David Ennels (Barwon Heads), Jake MacFarlane (Rossdale), Garry Sluce (Maryborough) and Jack Murdoch (13th Beach). But the joint winners on 9 under were Joel Barker (Yarrawonga) and Andrew Ick (Euroa). Both players had a great month which has seen their handicaps dropping. Congratulations to both medallists!

AUSTRALIAN PRIMARY SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP

A number of SAJG members recently played in the Victorian Team at the Australian Primary Schools Championship at Port Kembla in NSW. The team played very well with the highlight being from Su Huyn Oh, who won the girls gross section with a 36 hole total of 157.

SIZZLING SCORES IN TEAM APPLES FINAL

It took some amazing golf to be in the mix of prizes in the Team Apples Term 4 Final, played on Sunday 16th November at Oakleigh. Jaz Gardner stole the show with a sizzling 31 stableford points for 9 holes - yes, 31 points!! The youngster, off a 45 handicap, shot just 10 over the card to claim victory in the individual stableford section.

In the Teams Competition - the major prize of the day - it was the Jonathon Team (from the Ringwood/Dorset venues) that took the honours, with an outstanding combined score of 71! Team members Archie Nankivell, Henry Nankivell, Phillip Abbott and Tim Abbott, were thrilled to receive their terrific Bridgestone Golf bags.

MATIAS IS THE LATEST JUNIOR ACE!

Matias Sanchez has continued his great form by taking out the 36 hole section of the 2008 Victorian State Pitch'n'Putt Championship. Along the way he "aced" the 11th hole to become our latest Junior Ace.

The hole in ones just keep coming with Matias' ace now the 6th for 2008. Matias has a great affinity with the Australian Pitch'n'Putt course, shooting 2 sub par rounds of 53 en route to his win. Congratulations Matias!

STUART TO APPEAR ON ENOUGH ROPE

Golfers all over Australia will be glued to screens on Monday 17 November at 9.35pm on ABC for the appearance of Stuart Appleby as Andrew Denton's guest on Enough Rope. The eight time US PGA Tour winner and 2001 Australian Open Champion shares his passion for golf, the bush and his family with Andrew on one of the final shows of the ABC’s national top rating program.

Tune in to see for yourself how Stuart responds to Andrew's probing style with plenty of laughs thrown in.

2008 CLUB TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE

Pictured is the winning Spring Valley team of Youngjin Chi, Peter Short, Youngmin Chi and Denny Kang. The team returned an outstanding score of +18. The home ground advantage proved significant in a day of sizzling scores at Spring Valley to complete the metropolitan qualifying events for the 2008 club teams final.

The largest qualifying field in the history of the event competed at Spring Valley and five teams were successful in progressing.... Spring Valley, Commonwealth, Riversdale #1, Long Island and Yarra Yarra. In the modified par format, Ellen Pollock from Commonwealth returned the day's best individual score of +11, which included the event's first triple plus for a nett albatross.

Those teams will be joined by teams from Bendigo GC and Port Fairy GC who were successful in their respective events played over recent weeks.

2008 CLUB TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE - Term 3

Following completion of the final qualifying events at Spring Valley, Bendigo and Port Fairy, the make up of the 2008 Annual Final is now set.

A full listing of teams will appear here shortly, but needless to say the competition in the final will be fierce. A number of teams and players from last year's final have again qualified to get another crack at Kingston Heath.

Some really fine scores were returned in the last of the qualifiers, but the most outstnding was a score of +11 returned by Ellen Pollock from Commonwealth GC. Ellen has had a great year in 2008 and this round was surely one of the highlights. Ellen is pictured with Dayle Marshall from SAJG.

SAJG wishes to thank all the Term 3 host venues for their great support of this event.

REGIONAL SERIES UPDATE

The Regional Series has now concluded with the final events being completed in the last school holidays. The overall winner of the Regional Series is Catherine Odgers from Wodonga GC. On her way to winning Catherine took out 2 of the Regional Series events and amassed 5800 points over her best 4 rounds.

A Division was won by Hayden Nisbet from Beaconhills GC, B Division by Daniel Cann from Beaconhills GC and C Division by Kenneth Lee from The Heritage.

Congratulations to all the winners for their sustained good play throughout the year. Trophies will be awarded at The Signature Tournament later in the year.

The Nett winners on the day were the Frankston High School team of Mitchell Sheather, Tayla Strauss, Jacinta Hunn and Luke Talbot. The Frankston team recorded an excellent 13 1/8 under par 57 7/8 .

Next year SAJG hopes to increase the numbers of Schools and students involved in this year School Golf Scramble events.

2008 JN INTERNATIONAL

Each year SAJG sends representatives to the Jack Newton International, one of Australia's premier junior events. Played over 72 holes at The Oaks GC in Cessnock, NSW, the event is a terrific experience for any talented junior golfer.

SAJG was represented in 2008 by Catherine Odgers from Wodonga GC and Hayden Nisbet from Beaconhills CC. Both Catherine and Hayden were strong players throughout the year in the Regional Series and relished the opportunity to play the event.

And the winner is.....

In another month of great scores, one could feel sorry for Josh Vitacca and Ellen Pollock (who both had totals of 9 under par)and Kenneth Lee and Luke Lloyd (who both had totals of 10 under par) who missed out because.... Daniel Cann from Beaconhills GC with a total of 11 under par is the winner of the Monthly Medal for September. Congratulations Daniel!

SEPTEMBER 2008

"THE BIG COHUNA"

"The Big Cohuna" has been run and won with 65 players attending on Father's Day. Despite the drought conditions in northern Victoria, the golf course at Cohuna was turned out in terrific condition and there were a number of excellent scores returned.

Stuart's father, Malcolm, was again on hand to present the prizes to the winners. Pictured is Sienna Lambert from Cohuna receiving her prize for the best gross score.

ANOTHER ACE!

Liam Beattie has become the latest SAJG Junior Ace...making his perfect shot in the Victorian Primary School Championships at Medway GC on the 10th hole. Liam used a rescue club to make the perfect shot. Congratulations Liam, your prizes and certificate are on the way.


JULY/AUGUST 2008

SAJG is pleased to announce that this year's Signature Tournament has been confirmed for Sunday, November 23 at The Heritage Golf and Country Club. The event will be played on the fabulous Jack Nicklaus designed St John course.

SCHOOL GOLF SCRAMBLE NEWS

Stuart Appleby Junior Golf is pleased to announce that Spring Valley Golf Club has been secured as the venue for its first “School Golf Scramble”. The event is set for Monday, October 6 and should see fierce competition amongst many schools.

"THE BIG COHUNA"

After the success of last year's event, SAJG is returning to its spiritual home,Cohuna Golf Club, for "The Big Cohuna". The event is scheduled for Sunday September 7, Father's Day. We urge you all to make the trip to Cohuna. The golf course is a gem and it is sure to be a wonderful day. As an added bonus all entrants will go into a draw to win a fabulous Precept Staff Bag for their DAD! Parents are also welcome to play on the day and we will hold a parent/child combined event.

REGIONAL SERIES UPDATE

Hayden Nisbet has jumped to the lead in the Regional Series after taking out the event at Curlewis GC. The series now moves on to the Sale GC in Gippsland, a challenging and highly regarded course. The event at Sale is on Sunday, August 24.

2008 CLUB TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE

Teams from Eastwood, Woodlands, Kew, Riversdale and Heidelberg have progressed through to the annual final of the 2008 Club Teams C'ship. The Term 2 qualifying event was held during the recent school holidays at Green Acres GC. The best round of the day was a great score of +7 by Joanne Liew of Kew GC helping her team to victory and a place in the annual final at Kingston Heath.

"MONTHLY MEDAL" NEWS – JUNE WINNERS!!

Jack Murdoch from 13th Beach GC and Daniel Cann from Beaconhills are joint winners of the Monthly Medal for June. Both had impressive totals of 9 under par for their two rounds in a month of really good scores. Well done guys! Congratulations to all those who broke their handicaps.


TEAM APPLES 2008 TERM 1 FINAL

Sunday 13th April - After a false start on 16th March when soaring temperatures caused SAJG to 'abandon play', the teams from Glen Waverley/Spring Park and Dorset/Ringwood finally got their chance to strut their stuff in the Term Final of TEAM APPLES at Oakleigh Golf Club today.

4 teams from each of the venues battled it out in style, with the 'Jonathon' team from Glen Waverley/Spring Park team taking glory by 4 shots from the 'Jonathon' team from Dorset/Ringwood. (in keeping with the competition name, teams are named after 'Apples', which is also Stuart Appleby's nickname!!)

In the individual section, 6 budding champs competed with equal style, however it was Matias Sanchez who claimed the terrific Bridgestone golf bag, with 24 stableford points over 9 holes! 3 countbacks were conducted to determine 2nd and 3rd place, going to Patrick Ting and Jeremy Collins respectively. Well done boys!

Congratulations to all who competed, and to the mums and dads who cheered them on and caddied.
