There are many aspects to playing the game of golf - one of most basic elements is to give your body the energy it needs to play! On our "Coaching" menu item you can read about the physical nature of golf and how important it is to be fit for golf. You can even see Stuart being put through his paces on the exercise bike and read more about how Stuart stays in great shape to make him one of the world's best golfers.

Here, we're going to look at diet and nutrition, and why it's important to eat well in order to have the most fun you can and to play well.

Hydration...

Our bodies are made up of approximately 60% water and this level decreases by even the smallest amount it greatly effects our performance. The Melbourne Golf Injury Clinic suggests you should train yourself to drink about 150mls of water every 15 to 20 minutes, and when you're carrying out physical activity such as playing golf to drink about 250mls of water every 15 to 20 minutes.

It is very important to hydrate adequately in the two hours after exercise. The rule of thumb is that for every 1kg in weight you have lost you need to drink about 1.5 litres to correct the fluid balance.

THE BIGGEST RULE TO REMEMBER IS NOT TO RELY ON DRINKS BEING PROVIDED - TAKE YOUR OWN WATER BOTTLE!

What should you drink?
1. Water is great. If water is your main fluid you will need to eat some solids to give you energy.
2. Sports drinks are good because they give you a good source of carbohydrates for energy.

Fruit juice, soft drinks / cordial are too high in sugar for the fluid to be readily absorbed. These drinks need to be diluted 50/50 with water.

Resources

There are many great books and DVDs covering all aspects of sports nutrition, some of which are specific to golf.

Additionally the internet provides a valuable resource tool for children and parents wanting more information. Some of the sites we recommend are:
