ARCHIE SCORES ANOTHER ACE!

It's raining aces here at SAJG! Local member Archie Nankivell recorded his first hole in one in the recent Primary Schools event at Sunshine Golf Club on July 20th.

Archie used a hybrid to cover the 106m sixth hole at Sunshine and only found out about his ace as he approached the green on the uphill par 3. Only 2 weeks ago Ben Lawlor hit the perfect shot also. We look forward to hearing about the next hole in one soon!

REGIONAL SERIES - JUBILEE GC

Mitch Sheather has claimed his maiden victory in the race to the 2010 Regional Series Cup. Sheather, a talented +1 marker from Long Island Country Club, is scoring points fast in his bid to represent SAJG at the Jack Newton International. He had to chip in on the last for birdie to fight off Brendan Lewis (Yarrawonga) and earn himself 1500 Cup points.

Kenneth Lee (The Heritage), Luke White (Jubilee) and Will Garner (Beaconhills) took divisional honours. Many thanks to Jubilee Golf Club for being fabulous hosts, which included on-site reporting by regional television and print media! All participants enjoyed great hospitality and a tip or two as part of the junior clinic, lead by SAJG's Ashley Marshall and Jubilee junior coordinator Rob Chuck.

U16's CLASSIC - HOLE IN ONE AND A THREE-PEAT VICTORY!

10 year old Ben Lawlor scored his 1st career hole in 1 to win the Victorian U16's Classic at the Australian Pitch'n'Putt course. Abbey Trinca made it 3 in a row taking the girls title by some 10 shots, with a score of 56.

Trinca's score in the lowest girls score in the 12 year history of the event, while Ben Lawlor picked up a fabulous golf bag for his ace! The bag is almost bigger than he is!!!

Congratulations to all prize winners, and to all boys and girls who participated. This event is one of the most popular on the junior golf calendar, and always a lot of fun to coordinate. Thanks kids!

REGIONAL SERIES - 'MAJOR' STAR AT WOODLANDS

Cheltenham member Mitch Francis was the star of the day at Woodlands on Friday 2nd July, taking out the 2nd 'major' of the year by a whopping 5 shots! With the only sub-par round to be posted on the challenging Woodlands layout, Mitch put on a dazzling display with the 5 marker playing 7 shots better than his handicap. The weather tested the nerves and patience of most of the field, with +2 marker Su Hyun Oh taking second prize on 75 (+1 to a women's par of 74). Ben Allen and Ben Rogers cleaned up the Division A nett, with 71 and 72.

Woodlands juniors Max Cogger and Jeremy Ting showed some local knowledge taking out Division B with nett 71, whilst the girls showed the way in Division C with Sandhurst member Ashlee Broughill winning on 38 points, and Konomi Matsumoto and Jaz Gardner taking 2nd place on 36 points.

WENDEL FIRES AT KEYSBOROUGH!

76 players teed it up in the latest Regional Series at Keysborough. Located on the famous Melbourne sandbelt, Keysborough is a fantastic golf course, recently hosting the state Division 1 pennant finals. Despite the heavy rains and with the course certainly playing long there were some fine scores carded. The event was won by James Wendel from Yea GC who carded a great score of 69, 2 under par. Runner up was Mitch Sheather from Long Island, returning an even par 71.

Other great scores included a nett 63 in Division B from Jeremy Ting (Woodlands) and 44 points in Division C returned by Danielle Hu (Kingswood).

SU TAKES OUT "MAJOR" IN STYLE

Golfing prodigy Su Hyun Oh has continued in her amazing ways, taking out the first 'Major' of the 2010 Regional Series at Portsea on Sunday 30 May. The Kingswood/Kingston Heath junior who just turned 14 earlier in the month, is playing off +3, and she was quick to show us why as she took the elements in her stride on road to an impressive 3 under par, 69.

With the semi final of men's district pennant having been played at Portsea earlier in the day, pin placements were tricky to say the least, and the afternoon southerly didn't help to ease playing conditions from the back plates! Despite a four putt on the opening green, Su blitzed the field of over 70 boys and girls, by 9 shots. Girl power was the order of the day, with Long Island's Montana Strauss taking 2nd place on 78, and Sandhurst's Tong Wang claiming her first divisional title taking the Division A prize. Ever-steady Kenneth Lee (The Heritage) was in second place with nett 75.

MAY 2010

MITCH OHLMUS TOO GOOD AT PORT FAIRY

The other Divisions saw some great scores returned, with Jeremy Ting from Woodlands retuning a nett 65 to take out Division B, and Port Fairy local Matthew Daly shooting a remakable 48 stableford points to win Division C. Sincere thanks to Evan and the team at Port Fairy who run a terrific junior program and have given support to SAJG and its events over the past few years.

SAJG MEMBER ABROAD

On 25th May 2010, Frank represented the "Australian International School, Singapore" and "Stuart Appleby Junior Golf" in the Singapore National Primary Schools Championship. He competed against the top 100 junior golfers aged between 7 and 9. The tournament was played at Orchid Country Club on a modified 5 hole layout. Frank finished with the same score as the winner but was relegated to overall 6th on count back. He unfortunately double bogeyed the last hole which cost him the overall win. He still had a great day and walked away with a nice trophy for his efforts.

Congratulations Frank Vucic from all at SAJG!

'PLAYGOLF JUNIOR' AT WOMEN'S OPEN

Aussie sensation Katherine Hull was the star attraction at the filming of a 'Play Golf Junior' segment, to go to air during this week's broadcast of the 2010 Handa Australian Open, being played at Commonwealth Golf Club. 10 very lucky SAJG members were the centre of attention while the One HD (Channel 10) cameras rolled, with Katherine giving some vital tips and encouragement.

Professional golfer and well known commentator, Sandra Mackenzie Wood, interviewed the kids, and had lots of fun during the filming. Naturally the highlight was meeting Katherine but the kids also got to hit some shots from the main practice range with all the pro's watching on! What a thrill!!
