JUNIOR DAY AT THE JBWERE MASTERS

1,000 lucky junior golfers had an experience of a lifetime on 11th November at the JBWere Masters at Kingston Heath, with thanks to tournament owner IMG, and supporters and sponsors of Stuart Appleby Junior Golf.

Big name celebrities from far and wide together with the biggest names in Australian sport, joined tournament professionals to treat the kids to a highly entertaining day of golf.

The big - no, huge - news of the day was that Stuart's group was followed to the 18th green by Tiger's group. Kids cheered and screamed for their golf heroes, catching the players' golf balls as they tossed them into the grandstands. The crowd were given an extra treat when Tiger & Stuart talked with the kids for around 5 minutes. Media everywhere, kids still screaming... what a day!

Stuart kept the action rolling as he then delivered a short game demonstration for all his eager young fans.

TESTIMONIALS FROM "JUNIOR DAY"

Steven Krause, Head Professional,Heidelberg Golf Club

"I would like to say thankyou on behalf of the kids from Heidelberg Golf Club for the chance to go to the Masters ProAm. All the kids had a great day and can't stop talking about their experiences. A number of them scored a Tiger autograph, in fact young Kyal Baart was in the Herald Sun standing near Tiger.
All the work that you and your team have done to make the day possible was truly remarkable, to see the faces of just my kids was priceless, let alone the thousands that you got there was a sign that the day was a success.
The red shirt initiative was brilliant, and to see the grandstands full of red when Tiger and Stu were finishing their rounds was amazing. Day's like Wednesday have restored my passion for growing the sport, and I am sure that Australian Golf can only be better off because of it. Once again congrats to yourself and your team for a great day. Thankyou."

Roman Horoway, Woodleigh School

"Kids had a great time on Pro am day and so did I! Thanks for the invite. It seemed to go well, especially as only a small crowd were allowed in. We got close to Tiger and the kids got lots of autographs from all the celebrities who were there.
Don’t know if you heard, but I got on 3AW breakfast show and gave your foundation a big plug, then on Friday I rang SEN and did the same thing. Thanks again. It was a day we will never forget!"

Heather Radevski, Shepparton.

"Just wanted to thank you again for the fantastic experience that you gave Alex (and us), it was such a thrill to be included in "The Master's" if only in a small way. I'm sure it will always be a highlight of Alex's junior golf.
The whole team at SAGJ should be so proud, Wednesday was terrific, such a positive event for Junior Golf. All the players were so good to the kids, signing endless caps, shirts, balls etc. I think the full impact of the last week will be seen in the years ahead, with so many juniors inspired to reach their full potential. Once again, thanks."

Sarah Fitton, Gisborne Golf Club

"Just wanted to say thanks for a great day at the golf yesterday. The boys had a fantastic time and were (and still are) very excited. Apparently Tiger Woods “looked at them!”. So thank you. Thanks also for reissuing the tickets. All went very smoothly and there was no hassle at our end so I really appreciate the effort you went to."

Bronwen Young, CEO, Women's Golf Victoria

"Well done on an outstanding day at the Masters yesterday. What an incredible idea to engage so many young people for a golf tournament and you managed and delivered the day with aplomb! (names of children withheld) had a great time and their highlight was seeing and watching Stuart Appleby. Sensational event and I do hope you get lots of children signing up to join SAJG and to play our great game."

JUNIOR LONG DRIVE AT THE MASTERS

During the Masters, SAJG had an interactive zone where kids could come along and whack some drives into a giant simulator, to register their "longest drive". Over the 6 days of the tournament (including practice and pro-am days) there were some very impressive results. SAJG will be in contact with these talented young golfers, to award their prizes. STUART APPLEBY "MONTHLY MEDAL"

Hey kids… here’s your chance to play against SAJG member from across Australia without leaving home!

This fantastic event kicked off in April 2007. Open to all SAJG Members who hold an official golf handicap. Simply play in your regular competitions/tournaments and then send in your best two scores for the month, as calculated against the comp's respective course rating for the day. The two scores are totalled to give an overall score for the month.

At the end of the year all Monthly medal winners get the chance to compete for the annual Medal of Medallists.

Every month SAJG will award one lucky member a "Monthly Medal" in the style of a PGA Tour player's badge - just like Stuart wears on Tour!

STROKE, PAR and/or STABLEFORD scores can be used to enter the SAJG Monthly Medal. If your club is not on Golf Link, simply ask an official from your club (eg. Captain/Professional/Junior Co-ordinator) to verify your two best scores for the month, by signing the SAJG Monthly Medal Score Sheet (which also serves as your entry form). You don't need to send in cards (scores will be checked against Golf Link), and your club doesn't need to enter - it's as simple as downloading the Score Sheet from the SAJG website, filling it in, and mailing/faxing it to SAJG for your chance to win.

Click here to download the Score Sheet - simply fill it out and send it in!

2009 MEDAL OF MEDALLISTS

All the monthly medal winners for 2009 went head to head over the school holiday period in January. Played in the same format as the monthly medal, with the 2 best scores for the month to count, there were some really great scores returned.

The winner of the playoff for the Medal of Medallists for the 2009 was David Ennels from Barwon Heads Golf Club. Perhaps the result was fitting as David had actually won 2 Monthly Medals during 2009. Despite those great scores and a considerable drop in handicap, David was able to produce two outstanding rounds to play 16 under his handicap in the playoff. Since his frist Monthly Medal win in January 2009, David has dropped his handicap from 19 to 7, a great achievement.

In second place on 12 under was Mitch Davis from Yarrawonga GC, who shot two fine rounds of even par of his six handicap and in third place on 10 under was Ben Rogers from Sorrento GC, going even lower with two sub par rounds off his 3 handicap. Certainly great golf!!!

2008 MEDAL OF MEDALLISTS

All the monthly medal winners for 2008 went head to head across the month of February. Played in the same format as the monthly medal, with the 2 best scores for the month to count, there were some great scores returned.

The winner of the playoff for the Medal of Medallists for the 2008 year was Joel Barker from Yarrawonga and Border Golf Club. Despite Joel's handicap dropping to single figures during the early part of 2009, he was still able to produce two outstanding rounds of golf to total 11 under.

In second place on 5 under was Will Qoro from Croydon GC and tied in third place on 3 under were Oliver Leason from Cheltenham GC, Luke Lloyd from Jubilee GC and Ellen Pollock from Beaufort GC. Congratulations to all medal winners from 2008.

A Little on Joel's Golf

Joel is 14 and has been playing golf since he was 11. He picked up his grandfather's dusty golf sticks for a hit on the farm one day and hasn’t looked back. Joel attends the Yarrawonga Secondary College and his local club is the Yarrawonga and Border Golf Club. Y&BGC have a strong junior golf program, encouraging juniors through junior golf clinics, and is a club where members welcome and support junior involvement in the club's weekly competitions. Some of the men jokingly comment that they lament school holidays as Joel and a few other juniors get to play every day and they don’t stand a chance!

Joel practices every day and plays competition on the weekends. During last year his highlights were scoring a net 69 at Northern Golf Club in the State Secondary School Golf Final and attending the PGA ‘trip of a lifetime’ sponsored by Cadbury Schweppes in Queensland. His +8 (74 off the stick) in the Monthly Medal playoff was his best score around 18 holes to date and Joel is looking forward to continuing to develop his golf this year.

The encouragement and support that the Yarrawonga and Border Golf Club and Pro Shop Staff provides to junior golfers, as well as a local volunteer group called "The Godfathers", who support junior sport development in the Yarrawonga district, have been instrumental in supporting Joel’s enjoyment of golf. A big thank you to these groups who foster and support juniors like Joel in the Yarrawonga District and to Stuart Appleby Junior Golf.

SPECIAL MEMBER EVENTS

STUART AND STEVE AT KINGSTON HEATH!

It was certainly a big day for SAJG at Kingston Heath in December. Along with the annual final of the Club Teams Championship, Stuart appeared with long time coach Steven Bann and put on a demonstration and clinic for SAJG members.

Stuart and Steve showed the crowd some of the ways to improve your fitness and your golf, along with some of the drills used by top tour professionals to hone their golf games. Stuart wowed the crowd by hitting loads of drives.....long and straight!!!

Following the clinic Stuart took part in the BBQ and chatted amongst the families. As you can see Stuart is a great lover of the aussie BBQ!

STUART UNPLUGGED!

One of Melbourne's wettest days for months prohibited Stuart's exhibition clinic for SAJG members from going ahead as planned. Being confined indoors in the magnificent Spring Valley clubhouse, Stuart made up for this by engaging in an insightful "unplugged session" with SAJG manager Ashley Marshall and then answered loads of questions from the audience about his life in golf.
Over 200 people attended the day and all had Stuart autograph one of his tournament winning images for them as well as dozens of SAJG shirts and caps. There was also the opportunity to have a photo taken alongside Stuart himself which really capped off the day!

Special thanks to Spring Valley GC for hosting the day in difficult circumstances and to all who attended.

SAJG Annual Family Golf Day

Image of the crowd at Riversdale in January for the 2008 Family Day.

The 2009 day is again at Riversdale GC on Tuesday, Jan 27....a great way to finish the holidays!!! This event is FREE, being a SAJG Membership bonus!

Stuart's Coaching Session

Stuart and his coach Steve Bann put 24 Stuart Appleby Junior Golf members through their paces at Moonah Links on Monday, 21 November. The two hour interactive clinic included demonstration and instruction in putting, chipping, pitching and the long game, by Stuart and his coach, Steven Bann.

Stuart's Caddy for a Day

For young Stuart Appleby Junior Golf member Braiden Connor, Monday 21st November is a day he will never forget. Braiden, who hails from Castlemaine and is the only junior member of his local golf club, won the opportunity to caddy for Stuart Appleby around the home of the Australian Open, Moonah Links. With a proud Mum and Dad in tow, Braiden got a birds eye view of how a professional golfer prepares for, and executes a round. With plenty of inside knowledge from Stuart, Braiden is confident he will be ripping up his homegrown course in the coming months.
