TEAM GOLF INTRODUCTION

The Team Golf for schools program is designed to offer children the opportunity of competing in Australia’s largest participant sport.

By offering this FREE golf tournament to all Victorian Secondary Schools (years 7-9), we are making golf more accessible to the schools and children who previously may not have had the resources and opportunities to have involvement in such an event. No handicap is required to participate in TEAM GOLF, just a desire to be part of a team and represent your school. It also adds to the experiences of children already exposed to golf through their Primary School and the VPSSA championship.

Golf is a game in which you can have a lifelong involvement, developing many of the skills that are needed in daily life such as consideration, honesty, integrity, confidence and sportsmanship.

Golf is both a fun and challenging game. It is an excellent way to meet new friends and provides a basis for people of different backgrounds and age groups to integrate.

Golf clubs provide a safe environment and give you the chance to enjoy the beautiful outdoors. There are many positive high profile role models like Stuart for young people as well.

Golf promotes fitness and general well being with a low risk of injury. Golf also offers a mental challenge; you are always thinking as you plot your way around the course. Counting shots, working out your score or just calculating yardages and club selection are all part of the fun.

Golf can be played alone or in groups and is suitable for after school and weekend play.

TEAM GOLF FOR SCHOOLS STATE FINAL 2009

Frankston High School has taken out the State Final for Team Golf for the second time in 3 years. In a day of great scoring the Frankston HS team of Mitchell Sheather, James Savage, Montana Strauss and Tayla Strauss shot a remarkable 7 under par in the 9 hole ambrose format. In second placing was the team of Ben Eccles, Tyson Gill, Andrew Davies and Tavae Suani from Oberon College in Geelong. Their score of 6 under was looking a winner until the elated team from Frankston returned their card. Many schools travelled long distances to compete and all played extremely well.

SAJG would like to thank Latrobe GC for again hosting the final. Frankston team captain, Mitch Sheather, acknowledged the great condition of the course for the event.

TEAM GOLF FOR SCHOOLS STATE FINAL 2008

Secondary School teams from all over Victoria battled it out in the “Team Golf for Schools” State Final played at the Latrobe Golf Club. Last year’s favourites, De La Salle College (Charles Stewart, Alex Stott, Doug Loton and Josh Vitacca) took out the title winning on a count back over Oberon High School (Keith Wrzuszczak, Ben Eccles, Tavae Savni, Solomon Edwards). Both teams finished with very impressive scores of 4 under par 31. One shot back were Sacred Heart College and St Bede’s College.

SAJG would like to thank all the teachers, parents and students for making this day a success. A special thank you to the teams from outside Melbourne who travelled down for the day.

We would also like to thank Latrobe Golf Club for their generosity in hosting the event for the second year running. The course was presented magnificently, which made the low winning scores possible.

TEAM GOLF FOR SCHOOLS STATE FINAL 2007

The Inaugural “Team Golf for Schools” state final is the culmination of a year long schools program that has attended 45 secondary schools catering for almost 2000 Victorian students. With the crowd of school teams qualifiers arriving as the pre competition favourites De La Salle College teed of at the first hole there was a sense of anticipation in the air.

The tee and registration area was buzzing with over 100 Year 7 & 8 secondary school students from around the state.

At the end of the hotly contested competition the State Champions were announced - Frankston High School with a 2 under par score of 33. Team members Tayla Strauss, Jacinta Hunn (SAJG members) and Mitch Sheather were very excited to receive their fantastic Bridgestone Golf “Tour Bags” personally signed by Stuart Appleby. Frankston High School was followed closely by St Bedes College and De La Salle College both with scores of 34. St Bedes taking 2nd place after a countback.

“We’re delighted with the participation from schools in our first year of Team Golf and are looking forward to a bigger and better year in 2008” SAJG Development Officer Ben Sweeney.
