2010 REGIONAL SERIES - OVERVIEW

The REGIONAL SERIES for 2010 will comprise 12 events around Victoria over 10 months, from January to October. It is designed to take competition experiences broadly across Victoria, primarily for established junior golfers and better players, but also for younger players wishing to get involved with golf.
All Regional Series events now form part of the Geoff Ogilvy Trophy and WGV Junior State Rankings.

The REGIONAL SERIES is modelled along the lines of the Fedex Cup played on the USPGA Tour. Divisional points and Regional Series Points are allocated at each event, with bonus allocations for the 4 SAJG Regional Series “Majors”, which attract a bonus points allocation for each placing. A “Points Table” will be updated right here on the SAJG website after each event. Points accrued in events cannot be carried between divisions.

The aggregate of the best 4 points scores across the year will comprise the final points tally for the “Regional Series Cup”.

The REGIONAL SERIES will be played over 18 holes for juniors with handicaps, the maximum handicap being 36 (boys) and 45 (girls), with play being stroke for players up to and including 19 h’cap, and stableford for players up to and including 45 h’cap (Golf Link numbers must be provided with entry). There will be a 9 hole section for players without h’caps, played in a modified stroke format, forming part of the SAJG Rookie Series.

There will be an overall Regional Series Cup winner (gross) as well as three Divisional Cup winners (nett) over the year. There is only a requirement to play 72 holes for the year to be eligible for the Regional Series Cup and 54 holes to be eligible for the Divisional Cups. Players may also just wish to compete in the events in their area.

2010 REGIONAL SERIES - NEWS

Sheather, success again, at Curlewis...

Mitch Sheather moved ever closer to taking the 2010 Regional Series Cup by taking out the 8th stage of the Series, shooting a 4 over par 76 in cold blustery conditions. Curlewis Golf Club was as pretty as a pitcure, but showed it's teeth with only 4 players in the field playing below their h'cap. Division B was a tight contest with Brendan Lee(Heritage) winning with nett 72 (to par 72) on a countback from James Chapman(13th Beach) and Sian Zigomanis(Yarra Valley) who had a girls par, nett 73. Will Garner(Beaconhills) was the success story of the day,42 points taking out Div C, from Edwin Lee(Heritage) and Claudia Hazell (Bacchus Marsh West) both on 41 points. Kono Matsumoto(Victoria) returned a very credible 39 points.

Curlewis Golf Club's Bernie Denbesten, was on hand to accept SAJG's appreciation, and all present enjoyed the wonderfuol golf course, great hospitality and facilities. Thank you to General Manager, Matthew Loughnane, for his involvement in the scheduling and success of this event.

Sheather on the road to success...

Long Island talent Mitch Sheather travelled to Wangaratta to take out the 7th stage of the 2010 Regional Series with 2 over par 74, at Jubilee Golf Club on Sunday 18th July, and place himself in contention to represent SAJG at the Jack Newton International in October.

Sheather off +1, fought off pseudo-locals Brendan Lewis and Mitch Davis (both from Yarrawonga) to take the 1500 Regional Series points, and now trails leader Mitch Ohlmus by only one good round. Lewis, who couldn't buy a putt all day, was runner-up with a gross score of 76.

A good Melbourne-based contingent travelled north to give a great group of local area kids a run for their money. They shared the spoils of victory in Division A, with Kenneth Lee (The Heritage) winning on count back from Mitch Davis (Yarrawonga).

In Division B it was Jubilee member, Luke White, who took the honours, with 69 nett, from Kirsty Hodgkins (Heidelberg) 71. Patrick Ting (Woodlands) and Casey Wild (Wodonga) were also strong performers.

In Division C widely-travelled Will Garner (Beaconhills) was thrilled with his victory, an impressive score of 42 points!! He won by 7 from Melissa Coghill (Corowa) and Mitchell Coonan (Jubilee) on 35 points.

Jubilee Golf Club captain Mal White and junior coordinator Rob Chuck were on hand to assist with the event, and were very pleased with the outcome of the day, which included a coaching clinic lead by SAJG's manager and PGA member Ashley Marshall. Club volunteers busied themselves with country hospitality including a sausage sizzle for kids and parents.

2010 CLUB TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP - OVERVIEW

The Club Teams Championship gives every young golfer the chance to represent their club. (Players must have an official golf handicap to take part).

Play for the 2010 Championship uses a modified par format, with the aggregate of the 3 best scores from the team of 4 players making up the overall team score.

There are 2 stages to the event:

1) Qualifying Events – Your Club enters teams of 4 players into the Qualifiers. In 2010 country districts will be invited to enter a composite team to represent them. Golf clubs in the country are welcome to enter teams also.

2) Annual Final – The Championship will conclude at one of our finest courses, Kingston Heath (pictured above), to be played on December 21.

Past Champions are listed below and Spring Valley GC in 2005, Bendigo GC in 2006, Latrobe GC in 2007, Eastwood GC in 2008 and Victoria GC in 2009.

Dates and venues for the 2010 Club Teams Championship can be found in the 2010 Championship table below. Draws, results and images will be updated as information becomes available. Draws will be available 7 days prior to the event. Information on the Championship will be sent to all Victorian Golf Clubs in late February. It can also be found via the "Championship Resources" links (above).

PAST WINNERS - 2009

What a sensational day it was at Yarra Yarra, 16th December, for the Victoria Golf Cub team of 4 girls Lillie Callow, Alyce Fischer, Tiffany Lau, and Konomi Matsumoto. Using the Club Teams modified par format, they shot an incredible +18 team score. Konomi was outstanding with an individual score of +10. Victoria GC were 9 shots clear of their nearest competitors - Commonwealth on +9.

Conditions were testing, with temperatures reaching up to 35.8 degrees. SAJG checked official weather data every 30 minutes to ensure the wellbeing and safety of competitors, but all the players were showing their skill and persistance in the trying conditions, and are to be congratulated for their efforts.

Runners up for the championship were the team from Yarra Yarra (+13), with the Woodlands (+11) team taking out third place.

Teams from all across Victoria travelled to Kingston Heath Golf Club to compete for the 2008 championship. The golf course was certainly appreciated by the players and caddies alike and was presented in outstanding condition.

The winning team from Latrobe GC

Kingston Heath Golf Club was immaculate for the coverted Annual Final of the Club Teams Championship, and the Latrobe Golf Club team of Calum McCarthy, Pat Cremean, Keegan Michael and Harry Robinson certainly soaked it up!! The boys put in a fabulous effort, claiming the title (as well as the silver trophy AND the Bridgestone tour bags, each personally autographed by Stuart Appleby!) by 2 clear shots from the Port Fairy #1 team, closely followed by the Heidelberg #3 team.

Latrobe GC junior co-ordinator Ken Holman was there to cheer on the team, and said he was thrilled for the boys who have all worked hard on their golf this year, and deserve the spoils of victory. The players couldn't wipe the smiles off their faces as they admired their prizes and their achievement.

Well done to all the teams that competed today, as all had qualified to compete in the Annual Final by being winners and placegetters in their respective Term Finals held across Victoria throughout 2007.
