9 HOLE OVERVIEW

The SAJG 9 hole events are designed to take juniors onto the golf course to play with other juniors of similar ages and abilities. The events are for juniors, both boys and girls, under 14 years of age.

The events are played in a variety of formats, including modified stroke with SOME shortened holes and maximum scores (eg 2 over par pick up). This allows the players to keep the pace of play moving, yet still have the opportunity to compete. Other formats include 2 ball ambrose and the use of Callaway handicapping.

These events are primarily targeted at juniors without a golf handicap and/or membership of a golf club and all form part of the SAJG ROOKIE SERIES.

The ROOKIE SERIES encompasses 9 hole events at golf courses across Victoria. Clubs are encouraged to nominate 9 hole events from their existing club junior/cadet program, as part of the Rookie Series. Events include 9 hole "Club Junior Events" and also 9 hole events run by both SAJG and WGV, including the Regional Series (9 holers) and the 9 Hole Junior Classics (new in 2010).

For club events, scheduling will be entirely at the club’s discretion. SAJG will also provide to the club a prize and certificate for the winners of each event.

Rookie event winners are invited to compete in the Rookie Series Final, with the chance to become the "Rookie of the Year".

The Rookie Series is designed to expand on the great work already being done at club level to introduce juniors to the game and provide competition experiences for them. The series is open to both boys and girls and is supported by WGV and the VGA.

There will be a Rookie Series Final, to be held in December/January school holidays. The winners of each section in each of the Rookie Series events will qualify for an invitation to the Rookie Series Final. See story below on the 2009 Rookie Series Final, played at Riversdale GC.

Below are the links to the forms and information required for golf clubs to take part in the Rookie Series. The Series is designed to dovetail into existing programs/events at club level and therefore provide no more work to the organisers, apart from completing a couple of forms.

It is important to return the forms to SAJG with enough lead time (ideally 3 weeks minimum) to produce the certificates and mail out with the prizes prior to your event.

2009 ROOKIE SERIES - FINAL

The 2009 ROOKIE SERIES FINAL was played at the prestigious Riversdale Golf Club on January 27, 2010. The final was contested over 9 holes on the tricky layout and culminated in the announcement of the "2009 Rookies of the Year" following the conclusion of play.

The 2009 Rookie Series Final has been won by 9 year old Marcus Foote (Boys Champion) from Trafalgar GC with a score of 45. The Girls Champion is 13 year old Georgia Nankivell (pictured) from Sunshine GC winning with a score of 50. Congratulations to both Georgia and Marcus for becoming the inaugural winners of the Rookie Series Final.

In the U/14 boys section Ben Lawlor of Cheltenham GC beat Liam Ware from Traralgon GC after a count back. Kate Holden from Cheltanham GC took out the U/10 Girls Section.

9 HOLE CLASSICS

9 HOLE JUNIOR CLASSICS - OVERVIEW

New for 2010, the 9 Hole Junior Classics are to be played on the first Monday of each school holiday period throughout the school year. The events will form part of the SAJG Rookie Series, with the section winners receiving an invitation to compete in the Rookie Series Final.

SAJG has been able to secure three great private golf clubs to host the events in 2010. This provides a terrific opportunity for young players to experience great golf facilities and conditions.

The events are fully supported by both the VGA and WGV in an effort to assist young players on their journey through the game of golf.

Please note these events are open to boys and girls under 14 years of age, with or without official handicaps. For the nett prizes all players will play under the Callaway handicapping system.

TEAM APPLES

TEAM APPLES - OVERVIEW

The "Team Apples" competition is a 9 hole team-based event for girls and boys, run in Terms 1 and 4. It is designed to provide younger golfers with a competition experience in a fun context. The competition is limited to golfers under the age of 14, at level 3 on the S.A.J.G scale. (See "For Parents" section on the menu items at the top of page)

· Minimal golf experience required (able to play 9 holes)
· 9 holes per week
· Team focus at all times
· 2 ball Ambrose format with modified rules
· Lots of great prizes and loads of fun!

This term, SAJG welcomes Sanctuary Lakes Golf Resort as a host for Team Apples. We will also be holding events at Cheltenham GC and Dorset Ringwood.
